This particular excuse that I want to talk about today is kind of like a little snake in the grass.
It’s probably not even an excuse that you hear yourself say, it’s probably not even an excuse that you really see is an excuse, and in fact, you probably just think that this is normal. But what I’m here to tell you is that this is not only an excuse that I have fallen prey to but also a lot of my clients would as well and I kind of think that nearly everybody I know in some way falls prey to it and I’m going to give you one strategy today. One way for you to overcome it that might not necessarily be easy but it’s definitely simple.
So this one excuse this little snake in the grass has lots of different ways that it manifests or shows itself but in my experience is one of the biggest excuses or biggest barriers that we have to body shape change and into achieving your body goals and your lifestyle goals.
The one that I hear all the time is, “I am feeling stuck so, therefore, I’m not going to move forward.” Also disguised as “I don’t know so I’m not going to move forward” or “I don’t understand so I’m not going to move forward” or “I haven’t got all the answers, I don’t have all the information you haven’t given me the answers and therefore I can’t move.”
Do you see what I’m saying?
So maybe you’re saying to me now, ”I don’t have this excuse, Lisa. I don’t use this excuse.” If you really think about it, it may manifest itself in different ways but it definitely comes down to you feeling stuck and you won’t move forward because of it.
But the reason why you’re stuck and don’t have answers is the excuse that you tell yourself.
So this manifests all the time. I see it specifically with my clients who are focusing on body shape change and who understand a little bit to do with the fitness side of things like, “Okay I’ll turn up and I’ll do a class right. I’ll get myself strong that’ll get me fit.” But when they want to actually make significant changes, when they want to change their body shape, when they want to start to understand nutritional eating, when they want to actually set a goal which is some of the biggest things. I find this is where I hear it.
So what is the remedy? What is the strategy to move beyond this? What I’m going to give you is something that’s really simple but it’s not going to feel so good. It’s probably going to feel a little bit edgy, it’s going to feel a little bit uncomfortable and you’re probably going to say it can’t be that simple yet you’re still not able to do it right.
What I want to talk about is discomfort before I tell you this strategy.
You see, in order for you to grow, in order for you to change, in order for you to create habits, you need to move outside of your comfort zone.
We know this right? We’ve maybe seen this or heard this when we talk about goal-setting or trying new things but what does it actually look like in real life? What does that look like for you?
Well, what that looks like is you tend to just procrastinate the crap out of something when you feel uncomfortable. And well you stay ‘stuck’.
A lot of the time for me it’s to do with business things that are not necessarily body-related stuff. They are more like admin tasks or finance tasks. I know that I need to move forward on something and I know I need to make a decision on something but when I feel like I’m stuck because I don’t have the answers or I tell myself I’m not smart enough or I don’t know what’s right for me, I get stuck and it sits on my to-do list for days and days and I’m just not able to move forward.
Can you relate?
What I do in those instances because I am such an action taker. I make decisions even when I’m really uncomfortable and even when something doesn’t feel 100% comfortable. I still move forward because I have learned this over many years that this is the only way to grow and get better and actually ACHIEVE what you want!
Here’s the truth of it all: you don’t know everything when you are a beginner.
Think about it. How are you supposed to know everything as a beginner? How are you supposed to know everything before you move forward when you have never done it before?
So are you ready for the magic? The Trick, the strategy to get you unstuck.
You need to take imperfect action.
There is no perfect action. There is no perfect anything when you are a beginner.
If you’re new to something (and even if you’re not completely new to something but haven’t done it this way or in a while).
Even if you think you know something but you don’t have the information or you don’t have the answer that you think that you need.
Sometimes when I don’t know how to do something I sit down and do a little bit of it. I force myself I sit down even when I’m uncomfortable. I do a little bit and if I’m able to then use that page or that one little small bit of information and bring that to somebody to ask a question or get feedback. It’s better than just saying, ”I don’t know, I’m stuck, I can’t move forward.”
What it shows us if you just say you are stuck is you haven’t actually spent the time to look at it and you haven’t actually taken the time to figure out how you feel about it.
I would say that nine times out of ten you do have the answers, the information you need or you have access to it, it just feels really uncomfortable to ask the questions or read the information and you are feeling uncomfortable telling yourself “I’m not sure I want to do this” or “I don’t know how to take the first step.”
So here it is: take imperfect action. That’s what I want for you.
So the next time you’re at this crossroads when you hear yourself saying, “I’m stuck” or “I’m not able to move forward” or any of these things I want you to take imperfect action.
Just make a decision. Decide that you’re going to do the thing. Decide that you might not have the answer from this particular person but you’re going to look up the information that they’ve given you. In my online programs and in my studio, Quite often this looks like I already have given them the videos, the prompts, the blog posts, the articles that all of these things and people don’t generally read the information. They just want to stay stuck because why? Being stuck is less scary and less uncomfortable than making that imperfect action but guess what? It’s a vicious cycle you’re never going to see results, you’re never going to be able to move forward with something unless you take imperfect action, take that first step towards it. Then once you’ve got some feedback, once you’re able to to get some feedback about taking that action you can always change things.
I think most of the time we think, “If I start down this path if I make this choice right now I’m never able to go back.” No. I say this all the time in my class. Maybe you want to try something and if you try it you think, “Whoa, I’m not really sure that’s going to work for me” you can change it. You can choose a different weight. That’s what we say, try a heavier weight, if it doesn’t work for you, you can go down again. There are no steadfast rules when it comes to this.
You can review, you can tweak, you can change, but you need to make imperfect action first and foremost for you to get anywhere in the first place.

You can always change it. Your general direction might not change but the nuances will always change when it comes to your goals.
