“She thought she was just unmotivated...” (But sh “She thought she was just unmotivated...”

(But she was living in a freeze state.)

Before the Coven, she blamed herself for everything.

📉 Inconsistent.
📉 Sluggish.
📉 Always “starting again.”

But what looked like laziness was nervous system shutdown.

She wasn’t avoiding effort.
She was avoiding danger, the perceived threat of getting it wrong, falling behind, or disappointing everyone again.

Inside the Consistency Coven, we didn’t give her another checklist.

We gave her a new rhythm:
☾ Micro-habits for her freeze state
☾ Restorative practices to restore trust
☾ Somatic resets to activate safety

Now? She trains 3x a week — not from force, but from flow.

Her mornings start with stillness, not scrolling.

And she no longer calls herself “lazy.”

She calls herself strong.

“The body I hated is the body that protected me. Now I train with gratitude, not punishment.”

You didn’t imagine it. Studies show that chronic You didn’t imagine it.

Studies show that chronic trauma literally rewires how your body stores fat — especially around your belly.

This is called central adiposity, and it’s not a failure.

It’s a survival response.

“Trauma belly.”
“Cortisol pouch.”
“Stress weight.”

Whatever you call it — you’ve probably felt it.
That uncomfortable, inflamed, stubborn softness that no diet touches.
That weight that clings to your waist even when everything else is “on track.”

Here’s the truth:
 💥 It’s not about food.
 💥 It’s not about laziness.
💥 It’s hormonal, neurological, and protective.

🧠 Let’s get sciencey:
▶ Chronic stress activates the HPA axis (hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal) and floods the body with cortisol — a hormone that increases glucose availability and prioritises fat storage around the abdomen.
▶ A 2000 study in Obesity Research showed that women with higher chronic stress had significantly more abdominal fat — regardless of BMI or calorie intake.
▶ Trauma survivors often exhibit altered leptin and ghrelin levels — hormones that regulate hunger and satiety — leading to disordered eating or intense cravings.
▶ Low-grade inflammation triggered by chronic stress also increases insulin resistance, which promotes further belly fat accumulation.
▶ In perimenopausal women, declining oestrogen amplifies cortisol sensitivity, shifting fat storage from hips/thighs to the belly — a literal metabolic adaptation to perceived danger.

Your nervous system didn’t fail. It adapted. It chose protection over aesthetics.

“Your cortisol belly isn’t a flaw — it’s a brilliant biological defence.”
That softness isn’t weakness.

It’s your body saying:
“I didn’t feel safe. So I padded the edges.”

And now that you’re no longer in danger. It’s not about punishment.
It’s about repair.

- Strength training.
 - Rhythmic rituals.
 - Nervous system regulation.

Wintering. Have you heard of it? Long before New Wintering.

Have you heard of it?

Long before New Year, New You, there was Yule.
The Winter Solstice.
The longest night.
The quiet turning of the wheel.

In the pagan calendar, winter isn’t for striving or resolutions.

It’s for shelter, hibernation.

For slowing. For going inward while the earth rests.

The Gregorian calendar is man-made.

Linear. Loud. Demanding.

It was never designed to honour feminine cycles, lunar rhythms, or the changing seasons of a woman’s body.

Nature doesn’t begin again in January.
She rests.
She gathers.
She waits.

And yet women, especially in midlife, are still expected to override themselves.

After weeks of Christmas and Yule…
The planning.
The organising.
The emotional and mental load of keeping everything warm, fed, and held…

January arrives with pressure to reset, optimise, and perform.

But midlife brings a different invitation.

In perimenopause and menopause, the body asks for listening, not pushing.
For warmth.
For quiet.
For honesty.

So if what you crave right now is tea in bed…
Books.
A hot water bottle.
Early nights.
Soft mornings.

That isn’t indulgence.
It’s seasonal alignment.
It’s nervous system care.
It’s remembering how to feel safe in your own body.

There is permission here…

... to rest without justification.
... to go inward without explanation.
... to let January be slow and dim.
... to follow the Wheel, not the calendar.

You might still move gently.
You might still nourish yourself.
You might feel energy returning in small, quiet ways.

And if you don’t… that’s fine too.

Winter doesn’t ask for productivity.
It asks for presence.

So if you are feeling heavy, tired or the need for rest, you might just be wintering.
